Commercial Shower & Locker Room Accessories: The Complete Guide
A complete guide to commercial shower and locker room accessories — shower seats, curtain rods, grab bars, drains, hooks, and benches with ADA requirements for each type.
For accessible shower stalls, specify a fold-down teak or stainless shower seat, grab bars on two walls, a handheld showerhead at 48" AFF, and a barrier-free (zero-threshold) entry. All are required for ADA-compliant shower facilities.
Shower and locker room accessory overview
Commercial shower and locker room accessory specifications must address a more demanding environment than standard restroom accessories — constant moisture, humidity, temperature cycling, and heavy daily use. Material selection for wet areas is a primary consideration that drives everything else.
Shower seats
Wall-mounted fold-down seats providing a resting surface for ambulatory users with disabilities. Required in accessible shower stalls. Available in teak, phenolic resin, stainless frame with seat, and ABS plastic seat models.
ADA requiredCurtain rods & tracks
Stainless steel curtain rods (straight or L-shaped) and ceiling track systems for shower enclosures. Available in surface-mount and ceiling-mount configurations. Must support 250 lbs per ADA for rods used as grab bar substitutes.
Standard showerShower hooks & shelves
Individual hooks for towel and clothing hanging adjacent to showers. Corner shelves and shower caddies for soap and shampoo storage. In accessible areas, hooks must be within ADA reach range.
ConvenienceBenches
Wall-mounted or free-standing benches for dressing areas. ADA requires a bench in accessible dressing areas with specific dimensional requirements. Available in teak, phenolic, and stainless with teak or plastic slat tops.
Locker roomsShower seats: types and specifications
Shower seats are required in accessible shower stalls and are increasingly included as a standard amenity in healthcare, fitness, and hospitality shower facilities.
Fold-down seats
The most common commercial shower seat. Hinges from the wall and folds flat when not in use, keeping the shower floor clear. Available in two primary materials: teak wood (warm, premium aesthetic, natural moisture resistance, requires occasional oiling) and phenolic resin (completely waterproof, no maintenance, available in multiple colors). Both must support 250 lbs minimum per ADA.
Fixed seats
Permanent wall-mounted seats that do not fold. Used in higher-support-need applications (memory care, rehabilitation) where the seat must always be in position. Typically paired with a folding seat in ADA roll-in showers to provide both configurations.
ADA seat dimensions
Per ADA Standards (Section 610): seat width 15"–16", depth 15"–16", mounted at 17"–19" AFF to the top of the seat surface. Must be mounted with adequate structural blocking — the ADA 250 lb load requirement demands solid backing.
Shower curtain rods and systems
Standard straight rods
1-1/4" to 1-1/2" diameter stainless steel rod, wall-to-wall or angled. The most common commercial shower enclosure system. Available in lengths up to 72" standard, custom lengths available. Stainless steel (Type 304) is the required material for wet areas — chrome-plated rods rust and pit over time in commercial shower environments.
L-shaped rods
L-shaped curtain rods that create a larger interior shower area by allowing the curtain to extend beyond the shower stall footprint. Used in accessible roll-in showers to allow the curtain to wrap around the stall without interfering with the required 60"x36" roll-in area. Bobrick B-204 is widely specified.
Ceiling track systems
Tracks mounted to the ceiling with hanging curtains. Used in gang shower facilities (schools, correctional, military) with multiple shower heads in an open room. Provides more flexibility in layout than rod systems. Stainless steel track with vinyl curtains is the standard.
Shower curtain rods in accessible showers are NOT considered grab bars and cannot substitute for ADA grab bar requirements — they are not rated for the 250 lb loading required. Install grab bars separately and ensure rods are clearly differentiated from grab bars in the specification.
Shower drains and thresholds
Drain specification is typically handled by the plumbing specification, but the threshold (shower entry) is often part of the restroom accessory specification for accessible facilities.
Zero-threshold entry (barrier-free)
Required for ADA roll-in accessible showers. The floor transitions from the dressing area to the shower floor with no curb or threshold — achieved by sloping the shower floor to the drain. Requires careful coordination of tile work and waterproofing membrane at the shower entry line.
Low-threshold entry
A small threshold of 1/2" maximum is permitted by ADA for transfer shower stalls (36"x36"). This allows a low curb that helps contain water while remaining wheelchair-transferable.
ADA requirements for accessible showers
Roll-in accessible shower (ADA Section 608)
Accessible showers require grab bars on three walls of a transfer shower, or on the control wall and back wall of a roll-in shower. Grab bars must be 1-1/4"–1-1/2" diameter, 33"–36" AFF (centerline), and support 250 lbs. Specify shower grab bars in coordination with the shower seat and showerhead specification.

Specification checklist
- Accessible shower requirements — roll-in (60"x30" min.) or transfer (36"x36" min.)? Determines seat and grab bar configuration.
- Shower seat — fold-down, teak or phenolic; 17"–19" AFF; 250 lb capacity; structural backing required.
- Grab bars — specify on shower grab bar schedule with exact locations, heights, and lengths per ADA Section 608.
- Curtain rod — straight or L-shaped? Stainless steel Type 304; not a grab bar substitute.
- Showerhead — handheld with 59" min. hose; controls at 48" AFF max; barrier-free entry.
- Bench (locker rooms) — 17"–19" AFF, 20"–24" wide, in accessible dressing areas.
- Materials — all wet-area accessories must be stainless Type 304, teak, or phenolic. No chrome-plated accessories in commercial showers.
